3D pen is now available at BTI.

Technology savvy trainers and trainees of the Art and Design Division are using one of the latest innovations in the 3D world.

Access to the technology started early this semester when trainers have attended workshops on how the 3D pen works before this was introduced to the trainees. In coordination with 3D Expertos, workshops were conducted on September 14 and 21 respectively.

Highlight of the workshops include the introduction to the 3D pen technology, 3D pen capabilities, and its functions.

More and more trainees are also becoming engaged in their classes using the said technology allowing them to practice their skills, show their creativity and explore their craft.

The director general approves the purchase of the 3D pens to be used in the course in visual recording in art and design for both programmes in graphics and interior design. According to Basma Matooq, the acting head of the division, once the trainees become familiar with the material, this will also be used in units such as Materials, techniques and processes, Small Scale Design, Small Scale working, Product Design, Large Scale Design and Large Scale Working.

“Trainees are expected to study 2D drawing techniques using the traditional method before they shift to 3D drawings. The pen will help them to visualize the idea in three dimensional way rather than draw it in a sketchbook so they will feel the form , size, scale and design and they can see it from all angles so they can produce 3D sketch with it and test their idea or product. Using the 3D pen will add the additional element of feeling and touching on what the trainees have created. It can be used for drawing simple objects and cartoon characters or for drawing 3D prototypes of famous buildings, animals, etc. With the proper use of the pen, the visual learning, drawing, and observation skills of students can be enhanced to a great extent,” Basma added.
“3D pen can provide another tool for presenting graphs and images in class that will be three dimensional,” she said. BTI plans to use 3D printer as the next step to set up professional 3D prototypes.
